With as much music as we see today, it is no different form the early 70’s when hundreds of recordings would surface for us to purchase, but many left us wanting more or dissatisfied in the purchase. Merengue nowadays is more techno then yesteryears, but some surprising new CD’s have traditional sounds. Latin Jazz continues to flourish artist and recording wise while we are in a dire straits to get more airplay on both non-commercial and commercial Jazz radio stations. I know for a fact that many non-commercial (college/broker DJ’s) DJ’s never see Latin Jazz releases. I get them in many cases by asking from them directly from the artist.
Bachata seems to work for the young artists for young fans as the trend continues to grow. I personally prefer the newer sounds than those of the veteran vocalists like Anthony Santos, Frank Reyes, Bienvenido Rodriguez, Luis Vargas and others, and in part because they are singing about the same themes.
While Salsa has been hit and miss for many acts this past year slowly, but surely the year has been producing some very good tracks and in many cases on not so impressive full productions. A gazillion romantic singers continue to surface in all parts of the world that has even made it hard for me to keep up, as I'm sure it is the same for others too. I would have to say that the percentage of good CD’s from a batch that comes to me each month has diminished quite a bit.
All in all, there are many great tunes deserving better airplay at radio and clubs. If commercial radio were not more concerned about advertisers than the actual music, and instead would have a better business structure, then radio can be a haven for good music and possibly reverse the scales to help some of the following artist sell more, open up more live performances at clubs, festivals, concerts and even tour regularly.
My Top 200 tracks include all formats and many come from Latinos Unidos Online.net and should be promoted throughout the coming summer. Don’t let the order indicate anything other than they are all quality tracks. Look at this list as a log for any radio station or DJ at a club.
